Geraldine Monk & Victor Rodriguez Nunez

I’ve been to two outstanding poetry readings in the last couple of days: Geraldine Monk at the States of Independence  book fair in Birmingham on Saturday, reading from Lobe Scarps & Finials (Leafe Press) and the Cuban poet Victor Rodriguez Nunez in Cheltenham this evening, reading from The Infinite’s Ash (Arc), his first book to appear in English. Geraldine Monk is a wonderful performer, and her work really does deserve to be more widely known. Simon Turner has said: ‘Monk is more attuned to the physical heft of words than any other poet working in English today’ and he could be right. I hadn’t come across Rodriguez Nunez’s work before; some of the poems he read were stunning.
