writing poems and the last line

Last week I was mentoring trainee teachers in Essex and the East End of London for a case study on poetry in Initial Teacher Training (Primary) for the Poetry Society. Good to work with enthusiastic student teachers, and to work in Primary Schools again. It always astonishes me how much young people intuitively grasp about writing. I was talking to Christopher, a 10-year old, on how to end poems, and how the last line comes about. He said: ‘It writes itself on its own, mostly.’ I wish I’d known that when I was 10.
